Term 4: Twisted - Exploring Colour, Texture & Mark Making

Discover the expressive possibilities of paint and let your creativity flow.

This term invites you to explore colour, texture and mark making through an exciting process of experimentation and discovery. Using acrylic paint in both transparent and opaque forms, you’ll investigate a variety of techniques to create richly textured surfaces, unexpected effects and organic, free-flowing compositions.

You’ll be encouraged to experiment, play and respond intuitively to the materials as you discover how different ways of applying paint can transform an artwork. Techniques may include sponging, translucent washes, salt crystals, cling wrap, wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry painting, scraping, twig drawing and much more.

Rather than focusing on one prescribed outcome, the emphasis is on exploration and developing your own visual language. Your work may evolve into an abstract composition, a figurative painting, or something entirely unique.

Your Creative Journey

The first session will be dedicated to experimentation and mark making, giving you the opportunity to create a collection of interesting marks, textures and paint effects. These experiments will become a visual toolkit that you can draw upon as your painting develops.

Throughout the term, you’ll:

·            Experiment with acrylic paint to create depth, texture, movement and vibrancy.

·            Explore the interplay between transparent and opaque layers.

·            Discover exciting and unconventional ways to apply and manipulate paint.

·            Experiment with colour mixing and colour relationships.

·            Explore composition and learn how to create dynamic, organic arrangements.

·            Develop your confidence in responding intuitively to your materials. 

·            Begin to develop your own personal symbolism, imagery and visual language.

Nature as Inspiration

To begin the creative process, you’ll be invited to bring a small collection of leaves gathered from your garden or from your walks. Look for leaves that catch your attention through their shape, colour, texture or pattern.

These natural forms will provide a starting point for creating an organic, free-flowing composition, allowing you to move beyond simply representing what you see and instead explore the shapes, rhythms and energy found in nature.

Where Will Your Painting Take You?

As the layers build and your ideas evolve, your experimental studies may develop into a major painting, a collection of related works, or the beginning of a new body of work.

You may find inspiration in artists who have explored colour, abstraction, texture and mark making, or you may choose to follow your own instincts and develop a visual language that is uniquely yours.

Personal Painting Project

If you prefer a more independent approach, you can also choose to work on a Personal Painting Project during the term. You’ll receive tailored guidance and individual support as you develop your own ideas, experiment with techniques and work towards a painting or series of works that reflects your personal creative direction.
